Lauterbrunnen is best understood from the valley floor: steep rock walls on either side, Staubbach Falls beside the village and a road leading farther between the cliffs. The village is busy, but walking out along the valley gives you room to take in its scale.
Wengen and Mürren sit above the valley on opposite sides. Farther along the valley, Trümmelbach’s glacier-fed falls are inside the mountain; that visit has its own admission, seasonal opening and access restrictions.
